Abstract

683,057. Making valves. JEUDI, G. Jan. 24, 1951 [Jan. 28, 1950], No. 1885/51. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group XXVII] Hollow valves of the type in which the valve head 1a is closed by a cap 4, are made by press fitting the cap into the head and providing a welding bead along the junction line between the cap and the head, the cap having a circular flange 4a engaging a groove in the upper face of the head. The maximum diameter of the flange and its thickness are slightly greater than the maximum diameter and width respectively of the groove. The groove for the welding bead may be machined before or after assembly. The valve body 1 is preferably formed from a cylindrical rod by swaging to expand the bead 1a and drilling and machining the bore 2 and recess 3. A narrow bore 8 permits of introduction of sodium into the head, or the sodium may be introduced before the cap is fitted.
