As shown the bed comprises a frame mounted for tilting and elevating on a chassis, the frame having a fixed panel 11 and adjustable and hinged panels 16, 17, 18 each of which is adjusted by means of at least one screw jack. The jack 35, 37 for operating the foot panel 18 is pivoted by means of the drive shaft 36 to the fixed panel 11, the jack 45, 47 is pivoted to a torque tube on the frame and to a bracket 48 on the torso panel 17 and is adapted to move both the torso and head panels 17, 16 together while a jack 39, 43 is pivoted by means of the drive shaft 41 to the torso panel 17 and to a bracket on the head panel 16 whereby relative movement and adjustment of these panels may be obtained. Fig. 6 shows a screw jack comprising a tubular casing 65, a telescopic tube 66 carrying a nut 69 at one end in engagement with a screw 68 such as is described in Specification 682,453, [Group XXII]. A shaft 51 is secured at one end to the screw 68 and at the other end to a bevel gear wheel 52 which is driven by a corresponding bevel gear on a transverse driving shaft such as 36, 41 or 46. In the case of drive shafts 36, 46 their tubular extensions project to the outer side of a longitudinal side of the frame, while in the case of the drive shaft 41 this shaft is driven by means of chain 61 and' sprocket 59 cn an auxiliary drive shaft or housing 96 rotatably carried in brackets on the torso panel 17. The retractible articulated handle, Fig. 7, comprises three articulated parts 80, 82, 84 as described in Group XXXI. Fig. 3 shows the handle in operative and in inoperative positions. Specifications 683,070, 683,071, 683,072 and 683,073 also are referred to.
