Abstract
The acid associated with wool is neutralized in a two-stage process by passing the wool into an aqueous soap-free soda ash solution in which the amount of sodium carbonate is insufficient to neutralize all the acid to be neutralized, allowing the neutralization to proceed to the formation of sodium bicarbonate and then utilizing this bicarbonate, e.g. by using a temperature above 120 DEG F., and below 145 DEG F., preferably at 140 DEG F., for neutralizing the acid in further quantities of wool. Additions of p soda ash may be made to maintain an alkali concentration equivalent to from 0.15 to 1.0 per cent of sodium bicarbonate, e.g. the additions may be such as to keep the pH value of the solution between 6.8 and 9.0. A wetting agent is preferably also present.
