Abstract
755,686. Extruding. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 4, 1954, No. 16607/54. Class 83 (4). An extrusion press for sheathing. cables, particularly with aluminium or light metal alloy, and wherein the extrusion takes place in a direction at right angles to the direction of feeding of the extrusion material, has a die assembly with port holes 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>2</SP>, 6<SP>3</SP>, &c. which are so shaped or dimensioned that substantially uniform flow around the cable forming die is produced, the dimensioning or shaping of the ports being obtained by removable sleeves 12 inserted into passageways, which are all of the same cross-sectional area, in the assembly. The sleeves may have different size bores and are inserted such that the sleeve with the smallest bore, thus providing the greatest restriction, is nearest the point of entry of the extrusion material. Alternatively the sleeves may have bores which are tapered longitudinally by varying amounts, Fig. 5 (not shown). The ports may be of rectangular cross-section instead of circular or a combination of circular and rectangular ports may be used.
