Abstract

770,077. Coating by vapour deposition. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 25. 1955 [April 3, 1954], No. 8857/55. Class 82(2). In a method of producing, by condensation in a vacuum on a receiving surface, a film having g a plurality of components, predetermined quantities of the components are introduced simultaneously to evaporators individual to the components and are evaporated spontaneously on introduction thereto, the vapours thus generated mix -together to form a gaseous mixture the composition of which is dependent on the said pre-determined quantities, and the gaseous mixture is subsequently condensed on the receiving surface to form a uniform film, the composition of which is also dependent on the said pre-determined quantities. By repetition of this process, a layer can be built up on the receiving surface as a succession of films. As shown a storage plate 1, having a ring of regularly-spaced perforations 2 for each component, is rotatable about a vertical axis and is carried above and just clear of a fixed retaining plate 3 which has an aperture, from which a channel 4 leads to an evaporator 5, for each ring of perforations 2, these apertures being so spaced that when, in one ring, a perforation 2 is directly over the aperture of the ring, then, in all the other rings, a corresponding perforation is also directly over the apprpriate aperture. Charges 6 of the components are placed in the perforations 2 and the storage plate 1 rotated until a perforation containing a charge is over the aperture for the ring whereupon the charge 6 falls into channel 4 and thus to evaporator 5. In three other modifications of the apparatus (a) a storage drum is provided which has rings of radially bored recesses for each component and rotates about its longitudinal axis within a cylindrical retaining sleeve which has an aperture for each ring of recesses, (b) a storage drum is provided which has a helix of recesses for each component, the drum being both rotated within the retaining sleeve and advanced along the axis of rotation, and (c) a flat storage plate is provided which has a row of perforations for each component and slides along a flat retaining plate which has an aperture for each row of perforations. The charge of a component may consist of one or more pieces of wire, a tablet, if the component is a powder, and,. if the component is a liquid, it may be contained in flasks which break on delivery to an evaporator. The evaporation of metals and chemical compounds is referred to as well as components which react in the vapour phase, and the method is stated to be suitable in the manufacture of films of Se compounds, e.g. cadmium selenide, for non-ageing Se rectifiers, in the reduction of the surface reflection of optical. glasses, and in the production of resistors and condensers.
