Abstract

772,000. Travelling-wave tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. March 23, 1954 [March 30,1953],No.8457/54. Class 39(1). The wave transmission circuit of a travelling wave tube is a two conductor line comprising a metal core 14, Fig. 1 formed with a helical groove 15 and a wire helix 16 wound, with interposed insulation 17, in the groove, the wire helix and core being at different D.C. potentials and the beam interacting with a spatial harmonic component of a backward wave which is extracted at the gun end of the circuit. The device may be a backward wave oscillator, as shown, or a backward wave amplifier, Fig. 3 (not shown). The wire helix divides the helical groove into two parts with oppositely directed h/f fields parallel to the tube axis ; this is stated to facilitate spatial harmonic operation. The outer diameter of the core and helix diameter are equal, and the helical groove is of uniform pitch. The output is taken by integral extensions of the helix and core which form a coaxial line 23 and the other end of the line has a reflectionless termination of loss material 27, e.g. colloidal graphite, packed into the space between 16 and 14 ; the amount of the filling may be increased gradually over the last few turns to provide a broad band termination. Focusing is achieved electrostatically by keeping 14, 16 at different D.C. potentials and keeping electrode 26 at a D.C. potential between that of 14, 16, or might be achieved by a solenoid. The beam is produced by annular cathode 12. Since variation in beam velocity varies the frequency, frequency modulation can be achieved by connecting signal source 25 between cathode 12 and core 14. In an amplifier, Fig. 3 (not shown) coaxial feeder lines are provided at both ends of the tube. In modifications, the wire helix can be of ribbon cross section instead of circular ; the core 14 can be replaced by a hollow tube the inner surface of which is helically grooved. Specifications 734,479 and 772,001 are referred to.
