Class 68 (1) [Also in Group XXX] The upper run of a pair of endless chains 3, 4 circulating in planes parallel to a face 19 to be mined are so supported that mineral freed from the face as cutters 9 on the chain 4 adjacent the face cut into the face falls on to the floor of the working or on to an L-shaped trough 25 resting on the floor-and is swept along said floor or trough 25 in a direction parallel to the face by scraper elements 11 connecting said chains and is discharged on to conveying means at one end of the face. Bars having downwardly curved upper surfaces or tubes fitted into suitably positioned bores in the face or brackets 31 that can either rest on the floor or be secured to the vertical portion 26 of a section of the troughing are disposed at suitable intervals -beneath the upper runs of the chain to support them. Each bracket may be so shaped that portions 32, 33, 34 form a guide for the chain 3. To cause the lower runs of the chains to follow a syncline of the seam said runs pass around the periphery of a drum positioned in the region of the lowest point of the syncline. The drum revolves on a tube 40 supported in a bore in the face and consists of circular end flanges 42 interconnected by bars 43. The central portion of the apparatus may be urged towards the face by suitable units. The tensioning and advancing of the chains is by cable haulage systems attached to the mountings of the driving and reversing sprockets at the ends of the runs of the chains. The system between, the mounting 50 of the reversing sprockets and a carriage 53 that can move along a rail 54 at right angles to the face includes a resilient member 51. The other system comprises a cable 56 from a winch 49 passing about a pulley 48 to a yoke 57 attached to a mounting 46 supporting the driving sprockets, the pulley 48 being on a carriage 52 mounted on a rail 54 and connected by a cable 57 to a winch 55. Actuation of the winches 49, 55 together or singly control the advance and tension of the chains 3, 4 which may be driven at more than one position along their lengths.
