Abstract
Water-soluble organic titanates and zirconates are made by reacting (merely by mixing) from 1 to 4 mols. of one or more alkanolamines of the general formula (HOR)nNH3-n, wherein R is an alkylene radical of from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and n is 2 or 3, with 1 mol. of a compound of the general formula M(OR1)4, in which each R1 is an alkyl radical of from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and M is Ti or Zr. The alcohol formed by the ester interchange may be removed. Alkanolamines specified are triethanolamine, di-sec.-pentanolamine, trihexanolamine and di - tertiary-butanolamine. Alkyl titanates and zirconates specified are tetrabutyl -, tetraisopropyl -, ditertiary - butyldimethyl -, tetraisoamyl - and decyl - triethyl - titanates, and tertaisopropyl-, tetraiso - octyl -, tetraethyl - and triethylbutyl - zirconates. In Examples the titanates or zirconates were made (1) by adding 2 mols. of the specified alkanolamines to 1 mol. of the respective alkyl titanates; (2) by reacting triethanolamine with tetraisopropyl titanate in the molar amounts specified; (3), (8) by reacting 2 mols. of triethanolamine with 1 mol. of tetraisopropyl titanate; and (10) by mixing 14.9 g. of triethanolamine with 19.4 g. of tetraisopropyl zirconate having 1 mol. of isopropanol of crystallization.ALSO:An oil-in-water emulsion comprises (1) from 0.5 to 20 per cent by weight of a hydrocarbon solvent-soluble polysiloxane having an average of 0.05 to 1 silicon-bonded hydrogen and an average of 1.75 to 2.5 total monovalent hydrocarbon radicals and hydrogen atoms per silicon atom, and (2) from 80 to 99.5 per cent by weight of water and a water-soluble metal compound which is a reaction product of from 4 to 1 mols. of one or more alkanolamines of the general formula (HOR)nNH3-n, in which R is an alkylene radical containing from 2 to 6 inclusive carbon atoms and n is 2 or 3, with 1 mol. of a compound of the general formula M(OR1)4, in which each R1 is an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 10 inclusive carbon atoms and M is Ti or Zr, or a partial hydrolysate of the reaction product, the metal compound being present in amount to provide in the emulsion from 0.5 to 15 per cent by weight of metal based on the weight of the siloxane. Silicon-bonded hydrocarbon radicals specified are methyl, ethyl, octadecyl, vinyl, allyl, hexenyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexenyl, phenyl, tolyl, benzyl and xenyl. Emulsifying agents, preferably of the non-ionic type such as glycerol mono-oleate, glycerol stearate and polyvinyl alcohol, may be added, as well as aminoplasts such as urea- and melamine-formaldehyde resins. Examples 1 to 3 and 4 to 9 disclose emulsions containing titanium catalysts and Example 10 discloses an emulsion containing a zirconium catalyst. The emulsions are used for waterproofing inorganic and organic fabrics (see Group VIII). The catalysts may be made by mixing the desired number of mols. of the alkanolamine with the alkyl titanate or zirconate (see Group IV (b)), and effecting partial hydrolysis and subsequent condensation of the resulting product.
