Granular material, e.g. sand, is applied from a sand box 17, which is mounted on a frame 10, to the surfaces of bricks, &c., which have been raised into the box through a hole 19 in its base, and, after distribution, is embedded in said surfaces. Two pairs of opposing vertical plates 22, 23 are fixedly mounted on rods 26 in the box and vibrate therewith under the action of motor 18. Each brick passes upwardly on lift plate 31 through the vertical passage, of similar cross section, formed by these plates which have recesses 24 on their internal surfaces communicating through opening 25 with the sand mass in box 17. In operation sand passes through these openings, and after distribution, is embedded in the brick by the beating action of the vibrating plates. Lift plate 31 is raised by the initial clockwise movement of a rocking lever 41 which may be operated by the discharge mechanism, Fig. 8 (not shown) of the brick making press from which bricks are fed to the sanding apparatus. The top of lever 41 is connected by a link having parts 52, 53, the former of which is pivotally connected to a forked arm 47. This arm is coupled by a pivoted link 48 to a clevis 49 fixed beneath the table 31. The clockwise movement of the lever 41 is continued, and link parts 52, 53 are released for guided relative movement by the rotation of a cam 59, Fig. 6, which disengages the projections 58 of the blade springs 57 and the shoulders 56 of member 53 so that lever 41 now moves in contact with a rotatable bar 66 independently of the lift plate which thus returns to its lowered position under gravity. Vertical bars 67 which support bar 66 are thus forced downwards and rock a bell-crank lever 72 which moves a pusher plate 78 inwardly so that sanded bricks are moved onto a conveyer 81.
