Abstract

For carrying out the oxidation of organic compounds in the liquid phase by means of air, or other gases which contain molecular oxygen or ozone, in the presence of bromine, hydrogen bromide or a metallic bromide, a reactor is employed which is made of, or lined with, titanium or tantalum or alloys of one or both these metals, whereby corrosion of the reactor is obviated. Auxiliary parts such as stirrers and nozzles for the introduction of air may also be fabricated of the specified metals. The reactor may be used for the oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride in the presence of benzoic acid and of a mixed cobalt bromide/manganese bromide catalyst. The following compounds may also be oxidized : p-di-isopropyl benzene, p-xylene, toluene, cumene, mesitylene, o-xylene, m-xylene, methyl naphthalene, methyl pyridine, benzyl benzoate, p-toluic acid, methyl p-toluate, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, ethyl benzene, n-propyl benzene, b -methyl-n-propyl benzene, diphenyl ethane, ortho- and parahalomethyl toluenes, chlorotoluene, toluene sulphonamide, cresyl benzoate, p-toluene sulphonic acid, methyl p-toluene sulphonate, p-toluamide, p-nitrotoluene, cyclohexene, cyclohexane, pentane, propionaldehyde, n-butyraldehyde, cyclohexanone, and b ,b 1-dichlorodiethyl ether. Other reactor materials, including zirconium, are referred to. The Provisional Specifications mention hafnium as a reactor-material. Specifications 804,612 and 824,116 are referred to.
