Abstract
The soil resistance of regenerated cellulose is improved by treatment with an aqueous suspension of silica of which at least 90% has an average particle size of 0.8 to 1.2 microns, the suspension containing a multivalent metal ion and having been prepared by adding a hydrolysable multivalent metal salt, other than a basic metal salt, to a silica sol of substantially smaller particle size and ageing, excess of the treating composition being removed and the regenerated cellulose being dried to adhere the silica thereon. The initial silica sol may be a commercially available colloidal silica product and the added salt may be aluminium sulphate, alum, aluminium formate, aluminium acetate, aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, zinc acetate, magnesium chloride, magnesium sulphate, ferric chloride or cupric sulphate. Ageing periods of 3 to 6 hours are specified. Regenerated cellulose fibres may be treated while in the gel state or subsequently as staple fibre. Excess liquid is removed by passing the fibres through squeeze rolls, and heating may be effected at temperatures up to 107 DEG C. The fibres may be p subsequently dyed and treated with aqueous emulsions of sorbitol monopalmitate, sorbitol monolaurate or sorbitan mono-oleate containing polyoxyethylene modified sorbitan tristearate. Specification 728,237 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,622,307 and 2,693,427 are referred to.
