856,436. Electrolytic preparation of p-aminophenol. MILES LABORATORIES Inc. Oct. 8, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956], No. 31466/57. Class 41 In a process for the preparation of p-aminophenol by the electrochemical re-arrangement of nitrobenzene by the use of electrolysis and in the presence of sulphuric acid, the electrochemical reaction is effected in the presence of stannous ions. The stannous ions may be added either in the form of a stannous salt, or reducible stannic salt or a tin coating on the cathode which dissolves in the catholyte and is subsequently reduced to stannous ions. The stannous ions catalyze the reaction so as to result in greatly improved yields of p-amino-phenol. As shown an electrolytic cell comprises a lead anode 3, surrounded by a porous cup 2, a cathode 5 consisting of a copper mesh screen, anolyte 4 and catholyte 6. Specified anolytes are sulphuric acid solution, hydrochloric acid solution, phosphoric acid solution and sodium sulphate solution. The catholyte consists of a mixture of nitrobenzene, sulphuric acid and water. Specified tin salts and other sources of stannous ions which may be used are stannous chloride, bromide, nitrate, and sulphate and stannic chloride, bromide, sulphate and phosphate, stannous oxide and stannic oxide. Examples describe the carrying out of the process using stannous chloride of a tin-plated cathode.
