Abstract

856,462. Thorium and beryllium chlorides, prepared electrolytically. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 27, 1957 [July 3, 1956], No. 20527/56. Class 41 A method of converting thorium or beryllium oxide into the chloride of the metal is characterised in that a suspension of the oxide of the metal in a molten alkali metal chloride or a molten alkaline earth metal chloride, is subjected to electrolysis in an electrolytic cell having a carbon anode and a carbon cathode, and chlorine gas is so injected into the electrolyte as to cause it to flow over the surface of the cathode, whereby the metal oxide is converted to the chloride at the anode and any metal deposit formed on the cathode is converted to the chloride by the injected chlorine gas. The electrolytec may comprise a eutectic mixture of alkali metal chlorides or alkalic earth metal chlorides. The metal oxide may be added to the molten electrolyte in powder form. The cathode may consist of a graphic tube down which chlorine gas is passed. When the melt becomes free of suspended metal oxide and soluble oxychloride, the flow of chlorine to the cathode may be discontinued and, upon continuing the electrolysis, metal is deposited upon the cathode. For this latter stage of the process the graphite cathode may be replaced by a cathode of the metal to be produced or of a non-alloying metal. Electrolysis may be carried out in a vessel of silica or alumina or other inert substance. Examples describe the electrolysis of eutectic mixtures of sodium chloride and potassium chloride containing (a) thorium chloride and thoria whereby the thoria is converted to thorium' chloride; and (b) beryllium oxide whereby the latter is converted to beryllium chloride. Specification 843,261 is referred to.
