Abstract

856,830. Structural elements for holler flue systems etc.; beams. HADEX CO. Ltd. July 16, 1959 [April 16, 1958], No. 32370/57. Class 20(4) A structural element for use in the construction of a wall, roof or floor, particularly where exposed to elevated temperatures as in the roof of a boiler flue system and to attack by furnace gases, comprises a precast reinforced concrete beam 1, Fig. 1, having a reinforced heatinsulation portion 5 secured thereto or cast thereon to extend over at least one face thereof. The heat-insulation portion 5 may be formed of reinforced exfoliated vermiculite concrete made with a high alumin cement. The heatinsulation portion 5 may be cast around hookshaped tie members 11, Fig. 5, projecting from the beam 3, or may be formed separately from the beam 3 and provided with projecting bolts 23 engagable in holes in the beam 3 and secured by nuts screwed on the ends of the bolts located in recesses 25 in the beam which recesses may be subsequently filled with cement grout &c. 26: The elements may be provided with complementary recesses 29 and projections 27 so that adjacent elements may be interlocked one with another. The front face of the projection and element may be provided with a facing layer 31 of asbestos cloth. Bituminous solution may be applied to the faces 33 and 35 prior to assembling the elements. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown) the ends of the beam have integrally cast short extensions at right angles to the general length which rest upon the side walls &c. of the adjacent structure. Lifting rings may be provided within the top of the beam.
