Abstract

862,995. Liquid-pressure engines. FOXBORO CO. March 13, 1959 [March 21, 1958], No. 8876/59. Class 69 (2). [Also in Groups II and XXVIII] In an apparatus for adding to a first liquid in flow a small, accurately controlled constant proportion of a secondary liquid, the mixed liquid actuates a double-acting piston having rods which serve as pistons for pumping the secondary liquid. A cylinder 32 has a piston 33, sealed by flexible diaphragms 34<SP>1</SP>, 35<SP>1</SP> and having piston rods 36, 37 operating in cylinders 38, 39 respectively. As shown, mixed liquids from the pipe 22 pass through the distributing valve 29 and enter the cylinder 32 at 49<SP>1</SP>, causing the piston 33 to move from right to left and drawing secondary liquid from the container 13 through the non-return valve 30 into the variable volume chamber 50<SP>1</SP>. At the end of its stroke the piston 33 trips the toggle lever 44 actuating the valve 29 ; mixed liquids from the pipe 22 are then directed to the left side of piston 33 causing it to move from left to right. The secondary liquid thus expelled from the chamber 50<SP>1</SP> flows through the non-return valve 31 and pipe 17 to the mixing point 16 in the pipe 10 carrying the flow of primary liquid. The mixed liquids flow through the de-bubbling apparatus 11 to the pipe 22, and thence to cylinder 32 as described above. The mixed liquids leave cylinder 32 at 49, 49<SP>1</SP> and thence pass by valve 29 to the outlet 14 through a flow controlled 27 which serves to maintain a constant rate of flow throughout the system. The apparatus is primarily intended for use with an electrochemical system for measuring the residual volume of chlorine in water, in which the primary liquid is the sample of chlorinated water and a reagent such as potassium iodide is the secondary liquid, electrodes 23, 24 being provided for electro-chemical measurement of the residual chlorine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 759,424.
