890,077. Aromatic polysulphonamide filaments and solutions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 7, 1959 [Jan. 29, 1958], No. 2946/58. Classes 2(2) and 2(5) In the manufacture of artificial filaments by extruding a solution of a benzene or benzene substituted polysulphonamide or of two or more such polymers in a water-miscible solvent into a coagulating bath, the bath comprises an aqueous solution of formaldehyde and the filaments are treated with an acid, preferably sulphuric acid, either during or after their passage through the bath. The solvent may be dimethyl formamide, aqueous caustic soda, ethyl carbonate or an aqueous mixture of a strong base and an alcohol. The coagulating bath may contain, in addition to formaldehyde, caustic soda, acetic acid, sodium sulphate, sodium acetate, caustic soda with sodium acetate or sulphate, or acetic acid with sodium acetate. In an example, a 35% solution of polyhexamethylene benzene p-di-sulphonamide in an aqueous solution of caustic soda is extruded into a 40% aqueous solution of formaldehyde at room temperature. The filaments thus formed are stretched 100-200% in an aqueous bath containing 1% sulphuric acid and 10% sodium sulphate, washed in water at 50‹-55‹C. and drawn over a snubbing pin at 95‹C.
