Abstract

Microporous coatings are produced by forming a polymeric solution having as essential constituents a polymeric component other than a vinyl polymer or a polyurea formed by chain extending a compound obtainable by the reaction of at least one polyalkylene ether glycol and at least one organic diisocyanate by means of a compound having two active hydrogen atoms bonded to amino nitrogen atoms and solvent for the said polymeric component, adding to the solution an inert liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymeric component and is miscible with the solvent until there is formed a substantially colloidal polymeric dispersion of viscosity above 1 poise at 20-25 DEG C. and a polymer concentration above 7% by weight, coating the dispersion on to a substrate, treating the coated substrate with an inert liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymeric component and is miscible with the solvent, and drying the resulting product, the polymeric component from the time the coated substrate is treated with the inert liquid until it is dried being maintained at a maximum elastic deformation strength of at least 100 pounds per square inch, e.g. 130 to 300 pounds per square inch. The polymeric component may comprise a cellulose ester, polyurethanes, polyamide, polyester or polyesteramide, a polyurea obtainable by the reaction of at least one hydroxyl-terminated polyester and at least one organic diisocyanate by means of a compound having two active hydrogen atoms bonded to amino nitrogen atoms, or an elastomeric conjugated diene polymer or copolymer. Examples of polymeric components are given. Substrates specified are woven materials, e.g. twills, drills, and ducks; jersey, tricot, and knitted materials; felts, needle punched batts, porous batts impregnated with rubber or synthetic resins, eg. vinyl halide polymers, and leather. The substrate may be made from polyamides, polyesters, polyesteramides, viscose rayon, wool, cotton, glass, and mixtures thereof. The polymeric solution may be interposed between two layers of porous fibrous material, processed according to the invention, and the laminate split to give two substrates with microporous coatings. Specifications 849,154 and 849,156 also are referred to.
