Abstract

954,169. Cupping. AEROJET-GENERAL CORPORATION. Jan. 7, 1963 [March 26, 1962], No. 728/63. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division B5] A method of forming sheet material comprises filling a container with liquid, subjecting the liquid to an action or operation to produce a specified shape to its surface within the container and forcing a sheet of material into engagement with the shaped surface, the liquid thereby acting as a forming element and an hydraulic cushion. A die assembly 10 comprises a motor driven container 12, fluid 18 e.g. water with or without water soluble oils, and a sheet material 16 clamped to the top periphery of the container. The surface of the fluid is shaped by the rotation of the container and/or by mixers or other rotary devices or baffles in contact with the container or placed within the fluid prior to forcing the sheet into contact therewith, using e.g. conventional punches, rubber pads or explosive forming means. In an example an explosive charge 24 suspended by ropes or strands 26 above the centre of the sheet is detonated to form the sheet into the desired shape on the fluid. In further embodiments the fluid is solidified in the desired shape by means of a conventional refrigerator source or dry ice and after solidifying may be finish formed by a rotating scraper. Alternatively the fluid may be shaped using a contoured mould prior to solidifying, or solidified flat and subsequently formed by die-sinking, chiselling or scraping. The air between the sheet and die surface may be evacuated via an air vent and a vacuum pump. Liquids such as ethanol, methanol, diethyl ether, trimethylamine, phenylamine, piperidine, triethylene glycol or brine may be used singly or in combination, with or without water soluble oil and other corrosive preventatives and the liquid strengthened by an inert material, e.g. sand, sawdust or straw. Specification 925,422 is referred to.
