Liquid from slurry introduced at 32 is forced by inlet pressure through a slit 35 in a flexible, resilient (e.g. rubber) membrane 34 supported by metal plates 36-39. The thickened material is discharged through a sluice comprising a flap 40, rotatable in a rubber sleeve 41, to an outlet 42.
