Abstract
A process for the continuous thermal degradation of solid hydrocarbonaceous material having distillable potentially volatile matter therein comprises feeding the material at a controlled rate to a distillation chamber, allowing the material to fall freely therein whilst contacting it with a countercurrent of preheated hydrogen gas preferably at 15-30 atmos. so as to distil out volatile matter, and passing the resulting mixture of hydrogen and volatile matter to a catalyser wherein the volatile matter is autogenously hydrogenated, preferably at 750-950 DEG C., the devolatilized material (char) being removed from the base of the distillation chamber. The mixture obtained from the catalyser may be fractionated, the heavy bottoms recycled to the distillation chamber, and the methane, or methane from another source, passed to an isolated cracking chamber wherein it is decomposed to carbon and hydrogen, which hydrogen is passed to the distillation chamber, by contact with freely falling incandescent partially oxidized char derived from a combustion chamber fed by char from the distillation chamber, the char being heated therein by partial oxidation to a temperature just below that of ash fusion. Alternatively the thus heated char may be contacted with steam to produce water gas. The char from the methane cracking chamber may be similarly heated and contacted with steam to produce water gas. A series of alternate heating and water gas generating chambers may be arranged so that the char is finally reduced to ash. Alternatively char from the methane cracking chamber may be mixed with the heavy bottoms and briquettes to give synthetic coke. A suitable apparatus comprises a distillation chamber having at least one gas outlet communicating with a catalyser chamber and at least one gas inlet each disposed between two vertically spaced gyratory shelves provided within the chamber, each shelf so co-operating with the side wall of the chamber or with structure attached to the side wall as to prevent the direct descent of solid material past the shelf, whereby in operation solids descending on to each shelf can accumulate and be temporarily retained in heaving motion thereon and be fed in an annular cascade from the periphery thereof at a controlled rate. Fig. 1 shows in detail a suitable construction of such a chamber. <FORM:0977905/C4-C5/1>
