Abstract

982,425. Filtersfor liquids. R. P. ADAMS CO. Inc. Jan. 21, 1963, No. 2473/63. Heading B1D. Unfiltered liquid entering at 14, Figs. 1 and 2, passes from an inlet chamber 13 into perforate tubes 34 whence it flows outwards, filtered, into a chamber 15. Filtrate leaves at 16, though some passes down a pipe 32 into a surge chamber 31, entrapping air around pipe 32. A hand-operated valve (not shown) may be manipulated to work a hydraulic piston and cylinder device 73, Fig. 2, using unfiltered liquid. The piston rod 69 of the device effects intermittent rotation, by a pawl and ratchet mechanism, of an L-shaped backwash drain 50, 47, Fig. 1, connected to a discharge at 60. When the drain is aligned with a filter tube, the entrapped air in surge chamber 31 expands and forces filtrate inwards through the relevant tube, along 50, 47 and out at 60 with entrained dirt.
