Abstract

A method of insulating using foamed material comprises the steps of applying an unexpanded lacquer or varnish of polystyrene and a physical expanding agent to the surface to be insulated, and applying heat to the lacquer or varnish to cause the expanding agent to foam the polystyrene. By physical expanding agent is meant a substance which is liquid or solid at ambient temperatures, but which is vaporized by the application of extraneous heat. The lacquer may be caused to foam by high frequency or infrared radiation, steam or hot air.
