Abstract

1. Technical Result Improvement in combustion process and increase in efficiency. 2. Essence An internal combustion engine comprises not less than one pair of first and second cylinders 12 and 14, the first cylinder 12 having a larger swept volume than the second cylinder 14 and first and second pistons 16 and 18 reciprocable in the respective cylinders. The second piston 18 has a drive system 234, which divides the second cylinder into a first and second volumes 15a and 15b. In addition the engine is provided with an air inlet 25 and an exhaust outlet 27 and has a common combustion space 20 formed between the pistons, when the pistons are substantially at their inner dead centre positions, whereas, the engine comprises a transfer means for enabling gas flow between the first volume and the combustion space whilst an inhibiting means 128 inhibits the movement of fuel/air mixture from the first volume into the second volume, a fuel injector 34 provides fuel to the first volume during the induction stroke of the second piston 18, and a drive means for driving the second piston, the drive means are capable of maintaining the piston at its dead centre position during at least a portion of the expansion stroke of the first piston. 3. Field of Application Engine building. 2 ind. cl., 7 dep. cl., 26 fig.
