Abstract

he discovery refers to a mechanical system for head immobilization, which is used for conformal and stereotacticc radiotherapy. As shown in Drawing 1, thiw new device is based on three stable anatomical landmarks on the patient's head, which are : the occlusal plane ,the nose and the ossipital bone. The research that haw been done from the applicants shows that these pointsss of skull determine completely each head. The pproposed reproducible head immobilization system is normally mountedd on the CT-bed and/or on the radiotherapy bed. The immobilization system includes a horizontal alignnment mechanism, the frame, and the nose - occlusal plane fixation sub-mechanisms. The horizontal alignment mechanism is such that it compensates forthe misalignment between the radiotherapy source and taaaarget caused by random deformations (for example due to the patient's weight on the bed). The frame can have semicircular or semielliptical or another shpae that can surround the head on a quasi-transverse plane. The frame holds the two fixation sub-mechanism is identical to the other except for their distal ends - the occlusal plane fixation mechanismm includess a special disposable part hat is placed between the two dentures; the nosefixation mechanismm includes a special disposable part that is placed against the nose. These two special disposable parts are custom made for each patient in order to fit perfectly with the correspondinnng anatomical caracteristics that is the dentures and the nose geometry. The fixation mechanisms are able to perform combination of transnational and rotational movements. The cost and the time of application of proposed immobilization system are two of its basic advantages along with the precision of positioning and the confort that offers to the patient.
