Abstract

Environmentally harmful waste spray-paints may be recovered for reuse. Coagulated waste paints which contain antistatic agents are mixed with water and sodium-hydroxide, and the mixt. is allowed to settle pref. in open barrels for at least 24 hours. Supernatants are syphoned off and 3 wt.% of a dewatering and alkali neutralising fluid is added and the mixt. is homogenised by a pref. 'Z' blade mixer. Residual water and alkalinity are checked and if found necessary further reagent quantities are added, not exceeding 8 wt.%; 10-20 wt.% of the original solvent is added to the pre-treated mix, while homogenising is continued. The mixt. placed in a cone shaped mixer is allowed to separate for two hours. Water collected in the narrow lower pt. of the mixer is removed. Following the addn. of suitable solvents the regenerated paints are ready for spraying.
