Abstract
Prodn. of 9-fluorenone comprises oxidn. of fluorene in petroleum ether or DMF with O2 or air at 20-30 deg.C with intensive stirring. Oxidn. is carried out in the presence of KOH or a quat. ammonium cpd. (I). The reaction product is evaporated under vacuum, dissolved in water and the resulting precipitate is filtered off and recrystallised in methanol. The yield is 96%. (I) may be tetraethyl-ammonium chloride, triethyl-dodecyl -ammonium bromide, benzyl-triethyl -ammonium chloride or tetraoctyl -ammonium bromide.
