The prod. is prepd. by reacting metallic iron with a 0.8-1.2, pref. 1.0-1.05 fold stoichiometric amt. of fumaric acid in inert reaction medium in presence, as catalyst of (in)organic acids or iron salts at 40-120, pref. 80-100 deg. C.
