Abstract
Sodium carbonate and hydrogencarbonate contg. brackish waters are softened by combined ion exchange and lime treatment. The pH of the water is reduced and the prepd. water is passed through an ion-exchange column in Ca and/or Mg form. The effluent now contains Mg and Ca carbonates and hydrogen carbonates in soln. these are pptd. out by lime, allowed to settle and after sedimentation the supernatant water is sepd.
