Aq. effluent is treated to remove nonionic surfactants by treating under anaerobic conditions with Bacillus and Pseudomonas type bacteria and with denitrifying, sulphate-reducing and methane-generating bacteria recovered from fermented sediment treated at 40-90 pref. 60-80 deg.C and fixed on an insoluble carrier.
