1-Arylsulphonyl- 2-pyrrolidones of formula (I) are new: (where R = phenyl or unsatd.linear,branched or cyclic 1-8C alkyl, NR2R3, NO2, OR', SR4 or SOR4; R2 and R3 = H or satd. or unsatd. linear 1-8C alkyl, or NR2R3 is a ring opt. contg. another heteroatom; R1 = H , linear, branched or cyclic 1-8C alkyl, 0r 6-14C aryl; R4 = satd. or unsatd. , linear, branched ot cyclic 1-8C alkyl) Intermediate of formula (II) are also new . - Specifically claimed are 5 cpds. (I), including: 1-(4-t-butylphenylsulphonyl) -2-pyrrolidone (Ia); 1-(4-dimethyl -amino phenylsulphonyl)-2- pyrrolidone (Ib); 1-(4-piperidinophenyl sulphonyl)- 2-pyrrolidone (Ic).
