Androstanes and oestranes having the partial formula: R=alkyl (C1-C5); R1=acyl (is not > C20) which may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic. Ovulation inhibitors and gonadotrophin antagonists oestrogenic, progestational and claudogenic agents. Activity of long duration. By esterification of the corresponding 17beta-hydroxy steroid (See BE.686803; BE.693482; BE.695488 and FR.application 55,734). 17beta-acetoxy-17alpha-(1,3-hexadiynyl)-4-oestren-3-one.
