Abstract

1,231,058. Amino acids by fermentation. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 2 Aug., 1968 [14 Sept., 1967], No. 37074/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C6] Amino acids are produced (together with protein) by cultivating a micro-organism under aerobic conditions in an aqueous, nitrogencontaining nutrient salts growth medium at a temperature within the range 20-47‹ C. and pH between 3.0 and 8.5, utilizing as a primary source of carbon an oxygenated hydrocarbon as defined below (preferably one derived from a C 1-30 petroleum fraction) and assimilable by the micro-organism, and thereafter harvesting the product. Many species and strains of yeasts and bacteria are mentioned, but Micrococcus cerificans ATCC 14987 is preferred. The oxygenated hydrocarbon may be any carbon-hydrogenoxygen compound, preferably an alcohol, aldehyde, acid, ester, ether or ketone isolated from a crude mixture of oxidized petroleum hydrocarbons, but excluding carbohydrates, sugars, starches and cellulose. A large number of compounds is set forth including methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl and cetyl alcohols, oleic acid and methyl ethyl ketone. The fermentation product may contain at least 75% by weight of protein (N x 6.25) and a total fat content of 6% by weight or less. [GB1231058A]
