Pearls are made from expansible thermoplastic material, e.g. polystyrene or a polysul. phone, or an article made of agglomerated, partly expanded granules of the material is enlarged, by applying superheated steam at atmospheric pressure to partly expanded granules of the material or article made thereof, the granules containing a blowing agent. The partly expanded granules may be made by subjecting expansible granules of polystyrene to a first superheated steam treatment at atmospheric pressure. The articles may be in the form of a panel, strip or moulded piece. An apparatus for carrying out the process is described and illustrated in Fig. 2. [GB1228450A]
