Novel naphthacene derivatives of the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and each represents an oxygen atom or a group of the formula =N-NR 3 R 4 , and R 3 represents H or an alkyl, alkanoyl, thioalkanoyl, aryl, aroyl, carbamoyl, thiocarbamoyl, or amidino group, these groups being optionally substituted and R 4 represents H, or R 3 and R 4 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached represent a piperazin-1-yl group which carries on the second nitrogen atom an optionally substituted alkyl group, and salts thereof, are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula or an acid addition salt thereof with a compound of formula Pharmaceutical compositions comprise as active ingredient a naphthacene derivative of the first general formula above, or a non-toxic salt thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or coating.
