Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A pig house is ventilated by supplying outside air through openings in the upper part of the house and by means of impellers, drawing the air to a given distance above the floor where it issues through a funnel and is accelerated and then exhausted above the individual pens thereby ensuring a supply of fresh air in the part of the house occupied by the animals. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the air enters via a ridge ventilator 4 and is drawn by impellers 11 in the side walls down a duct 6 through a funnel 7 and through flaps 8 and slides 9 and over the pens 1 to the impellers. The air temperature and humidity are controlled. Adjustable openings are provided in the funnel and if the impellers stop due to electrical failure emergency openings 12 are opened, automatically or manually, to admit air and the duct 6 acts as a chimney. In other embodiments, the air may enter inlets under the eaves and pass along a horizontal duct to the vertical duct 6 and impellers may be provided at the eaves (Fig. 6) or the air may enter at the eaves and pass into a sloping duct lying on the inside of a pitched roof (Fig. 7) or again a horizontal entry duct may lie immediately beneath the ridge (Fig. 8). In another embodiment (Fig. 9, the air may pass between a double ceiling to reach the vertical duct 6. Heating elements and a venturi by means of which water can be introduced into the air flow are located at the lower end of the duct 6.
