Abstract

1,264,161. Non-woven fabric. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 11 April, 1969 [12 April, 1968], No. 18620/69. Heading D1R. A non-woven coherent textile of substantially uniform structure and thickness is made by laying down at least 2 crossing layers of strands of yarn or tow 11 held under restraint between two rows of restraining means e.g. tenter clips or pins 12 and then mechanically intermingling and interlocking the strands of the different layers e.g. by needles 17. A layer of warp strands 21 of yarn or tow may be laid on either or both sides of cross-laid layers and the product needled or four layers of cross-laid strands may be needled together under restraint. Contrasting colours of tow or yarn may be used to produce a patterned effect. The yarn may be of synthetic continuous filaments or staple spun. They are preferably crimped and may be of glass or graphite or chosen from a list of synthetic fibres. The textile formed by be needled to a nonwoven batting or a woven cloth or plastic foam backing.
