Abstract

1,256,082. Fluoropyridines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Sept., 1969 [30 Sept., 1968], No. 46314/68. Heading C2C. Chlorine is replaced by fluorine as a substituent in a pyridine ring by reaction of a chloropyridine or chlorofluoropyridine with potassium fluoride in a polar aprotic solvent in the presence of 0À2 to 2À0 parts by volume water per 100 parts by volume of the solvent. Solvents specified are N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, dimethyl sulphone, ethylene carbonate, formamide, N- methyl-acetamide, N-methyl-formamide, dimethyl formamide and tetramethylene sulphone. Reaction is preferably effected at 160‹ to 250‹ C. under reflux. The treatment of pentachloropyridine to give 3,5-dichloro-2,4,6-trifluoropyridine, 3-chloro-tetrafluoropyridine and 2-fluorotetrachloropyridine is exemplified. [GB1256082A]
