Abstract

Division B5] Regenerated cellulose casing are produced by extruding in the form of a tubing a viscose containing 0.1 to 14% by weight, especially 0.1 to 2.5%, based upon the dry weight of the cellulose in the viscose, of a softening antiblock additive, said additive being a fullyesterified fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol, and coagulating and regenerating the cellulose in the extruded tubing. A moistureproof, gas-barrier coating may be applied to the resulting tubular regenerated cellulose casing containing the additive. The additive may be an animal or a vegetable fat or oil, e.g. castor oil. The additive may be incorporated into the viscose in a proportion of at least 2.5% by weight based upon the dry weight of the cellulose in the viscose and the resulting mixture may be extruded on to a fibrous substrate in the form of tubing. In the examples, the castor oil is blended into the viscose in the form of a 10% emulsion comprised of 600 grams of castor oil, 5,275 grams of distilled water and 125 grams of a dispersing agent consisting chiefly of a sodium salt of a sulphated methyl oleate. The emulsion is incorporated in a viscose containing 7.5% by weight of cellulose. The tubular casings of regenerated cellulose formed are glycerinated in the usual manner to soften them, the percentage of glycerin added to the cellulose ranging from 36 to 55% by weight. Each casing is coated with a moisture-proof gas barrier consisting essentially of a vinylidene chloride copolymer applied by passing the casings through a dip tank containing the coating solution. The moisture-proof-gas barrier may be applied to the outside, inside, or both surfaces of the wall of the casing.
