Abstract
1277589 Electric Storage heaters SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO Ltd 18 Dec 1969 [20 Dec 1968] 60834/68 Heading F4U In an "off peak" electric storage heater comprising a heat storage body H incorporating heating resistors R1, R2, R3 and a control temperature thermostat TH1 and a cut out thermostat TH2, the power dissipation of the heating resistors during a charging period is controlled selectively to any of a plurality of different values. A manually operable charge rate control switch 51 with contacts 51a, 51b, 51c is provided for controlling the number of heating resistances brought into use. In one mode of operation all three contacts 51a, 51b, 51c of switch 51 are closed to provide full rate of heating below the control temperature X. On reaching the control temperature contacts S2 of the thermostat TH1 open whereby current passes through resistance R4 and causes heating of bimetal 25 which in turn opens contacts S3 to cut off the current flowing through a solenoid L1 with the result that the contacts 55a, 55b, 55c open to cut off current to the resistors R1, R2 & R3. The circuit components are chosen to provide a small ratio of closed to open time for the contacts S3. The contacts 55b, and 55c remain open when the contacts 53 close again so that no further current flows through R2 and R3. If the contacts 52 fail to break for any reason the cut out thermostat TH2 comes into operation. The above arrangement maintains the mean temperature of the heat storage body at the control temperature X‹C until the end of the off peak charging period.
