Abstract

1,192,860. Vehicle cleansing apparatus. ARROW LABORATORIES Inc. 23 Dec., 1968, No. 61203/68. Heading B7J. [Also in Division C5] A method of washing a vehicle comprises applying to the outer surface of the vehicle first, an acid aqueous solution which also contains a surfactant which is soluble and stable in acid solution, and second, an alkaline aqueous solution to neutralize or remove the acid. In a preferred method the acid aqueous solution contains hydrofluoric acid at a concentration of from 0À01% to 0À2% by weight and/or fluoboric acid. The surfactant in the acid aqueous solution may be non-ionic and have a concentration of from 0À01% to 0À2% by weight of the acid aqueous solution. Alternatively or additionally the acid aqueous solution may contain a cationic surfactant, which when absorbed does not make the surface hydrophobic, at a concentration of from 0À005% to 0À1% of the weight of acid aqueous solution. This cationic surfactant has the general formula where A which may be the same or different in each case is a polyether chain made up of -CH 2 -CH 2 -O- and/or -CH(CH 3 )-CH 2 - O- units and B is an alkene diradical such as an ethylene diradical. The alkaline aqueous solution contains sequestering agents such as sodium metasilicate, potassium tetrapyrophosphate, ammonia triacetic acid and ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid and also an alkali-stable surfactant. At least a quarter by weight of the alkaline material used in the alkaline solution is in the form of potassium compounds and the solution is at a dilution of from 50: 1 to 600: 1 by weight of the alkaline solids used. Soft water is preferably employed in the preparation of the solutions and the vehicle is given a final rinse in water. The volume of each solution used is not less than 1 gallon per 50 sq. feet of vehicle surface. Specific formulations of the solution compositions are described (see Divisions C4-C5). The solutions may be applied by spraying from a vertically displaceable horizontal rectangular frame arranged round the vehicle. [GB1192860A]
