Abstract

1282290 Aircraft fuels IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Oct 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 49835/69 Heading C5G An hydrocarbon aircraft fuel of flash point at least 90‹ F. contains a copolymer of ethylene with a higher olefin, e.g. propylene, which contains not more than 95 wt. per cent ethylene, has a molecular structure comprising at least 2 runs of at least 10 units of ethylene separated by runs of hydrocarbon-soluble polymer and is random copolymer of ethylene and higher olefin or homopolymer of the higher olefin, the polymer having a viscosity average molecular weight of at least 10,000. The runs of ethylene form associative bonds in the fuel which produces a cross-linked (gel) structure in the fuel. A solution of the copolymer, which forms a cloudy solution at room temperature, can be made by heating the fuel with 0À01-10 wt. per cent of the copolymer and thereafter cooling and optionally diluting with additional fuel. The fuel can contain dissolved copolymer of molecular weight at least 10<SP>6</SP> or if intrinsic viscosity greater than 2À5 dls./gm. in a concentration such that there is molecular overlap of the dissolved copolymer in the fuel.
