1327113 Fastener attaching machine TEXTRON Inc 16 Oct 1970 [12 Nov 1969] 49321/70 Heading A3H [Also in Division B4] A machine for attaching snap fastener elements, e.g. backing plate element 18 and socket element 20 to each other with material clamped therebetween, feeds two strips of the elements by a feed mechanism comprising arms 90, 108 with grippers 98, 118 from for example two strip reels (Fig. 1, not shown), and guides 94, 114 into adjacent positions where the leading elements face each other. A knife mechanism comprising knife blades 132, 175 severs the leading elements from the strip and the elements are clinched onto the material by a cooperating ram 140 and spring-loaded pivoted anvil 156 mechanism. The ram and anvil and feeding mechanisms are actuated via linkage elements 48-60 and 70-108 respectively by a pneumatic cylinder assembly where both the cylinder body 34 and piston shaft 46 are movable relative to their supports, the knife mechanism is operated by plunger 146 on the ram and by a pivotal movement of the anvil. Preferably one element is severed before clamping, the other afterwards. The knives may be manually operated and after each cycle of operations the cylinder 34 is discharged, automatically by a switch mechanism (214, Fig. 7, not shown) associated with the pivoting anvil.
