Abstract
1354698 Dispersions of heterogeneous polymer particles IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 July 1971 [10 Aug 1970] 38365/70 Heading C3P A process for the preparation of a non- aqueous dispersion of heterogeneous polymer particles comprises polymerizing a monomer B in solution in an organic liquid in the presence in the liquid of a stable dispersion of particles of polymer A, monomer B producing a polymer B which is insoluble in the organic liquid and which occurs as a separate phase within the particles of polymer A, and also monomer B swelling polymer A by being absorbed thereby to the extent of at least 10% of the weight of polymer A, and the particles of polymer A containing an initiator or catalyst for the polymerization of monomer B. Generally, more than one particle of polymer B will be formed in each particle of polymer A. In the preferred procedure monomer B is ethylenically unsaturated and the catalyst is a free radical catalyst, e.g. azodiisobutyronitrile. The product dispersions can be used in coating applications. In Examples (1) methyl methacrylate is polymerized in a stable dispersion of poly ethyl acrylate, (2) ethyl acrylate is polymerized in a stable polymethyl methacrylate dispersion, (3) methyl methacrylate is polymerized in a stable dispersion of ethyl acrylate/2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate copolymer cross-linked by reaction with hexamethylene diisocyanate, (4) vinyl pyrrolidone is polymerized in a stable polymethyl methacrylate dispersion, (5) methyl methacrylate is polymerized in a dispersion of a polyester derived from adipic acid, diethylene glycol and glycerol, (6) acrylonitrile is polymerized in a cross-linked ethyl acrylate polymer dispersion similar to that in (3) and (7) styrene is polymerized in a cross-linked polymer dispersion as in (3); these polymerizations are conducted in hydrocarbon diluents.
