1322102 Treatment of iron deficiency in piglets FISONS Ltd 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 23575/71 Heading A5B Iron deficiency in piglets is treated prophylactically by administering orally to the piglet within 24 hours of its birth a complex containing iron and a polysaccharide, a disaccharide, a protein or a polypeptide. The polysaccharide may be a dextran, dextrin, polyglucose, polymannose, polymaltose, polysucrose, polygalactose, mannan, galactan, levan, inulin, polyfructose, xylan, araban, an alginate, chrondroitin or pectin; the end groups of the polysaccharide may be modified by hydrogenation, oxidation, alkali, degradation, heptonate formation or glycerol glycoside formation; the disaccharide may be sucrose and the protein may be gelatin. The complexes may be associated with one or more other non-toxic polyhydroxy compound e.g. sucrose, glycol, sorbose, sorbitol, xylose, glucose or galactose; or one or more non-toxic organic acids e.g. citric, tartaric or aspartic acid. The complex may be used in admixture with another compound which is orally tolerated by the piglet such as an inert diluent, a piglet foodstuff such as milk; a physiologically desirable trace element such as copper, cobalt, manganese or a mixture thereof; a vitamin e.g. vitamins A, D, B 1 , B 2 , B 6 , B 12 , E (or other antioxidants) or a mixture thereof; an antibiotic e.g. a broad spectrum antibiotic such as chlortetracycline hydrochloride and oxytetracylines, a nitrofuran; an absorption aid e.g. an amino acid or an immunoglobulin. The complex may be administered in the piglet's feed or drink and the piglet is preferably reared for at least 2 weeks after the treatment. A composition orally acceptable to the newborn piglet comprises an iron dextran and a diluent, surface active agent, carrier, or other matter which is orally acceptable to the piglet and is in the form of a solid or paste such as a wettable powder, tablet, capsule, pill or bolus.
