Abstract
1342071 Razor blades WILKINSON SWORD Ltd 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970] 18409/70 Heading C7F [Also in Division B4] A razor blade has two different superposed coatings on at least a cutting edge, each coating being of a metal, a metal compound, a silicon compound, or an alloy of any of the foregoing. The first coating is preferably of Cr, Pt, Ir, Os, Pd, Rh, Ru, Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, Co, Ni, Mn, Re or W and the second coating is preferably a carbide, boride, oxide, nitride, silicide or fluoride of Cr, Si, W, Mo, Co, Al, Mn, V, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf, Re or a rare earth. The coatings may be applied using an ion-plasma sputtering technique in an atmosphere of argon or helium. After the first coating has been formed a quantity of air is admitted so as to oxidize the surface of said coating. The second coating is then applied using an atmosphere containing nitrogen if it is required that said second coating consist of a nitride. A coating of a polymer e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene or a co-polymer of thio-carbonyl fluoride and polytetrafluoroethylene, may be provided on the said second coating. The coatings may be produced by vapour deposition or reactive evaporation instead of by sputtering. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1221642 and 1193067.
