1299041 Derivatives of carbazole and cycle. penta[b]indole F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 24 May 1971 [25 May 1970] 16567/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of formula and their enantiomers and salts, wherein n and r are each 1 or 2; R<SP>1</SP> is halogen, OH, CN, C 1-7 alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio, PhCH 2 O, CF 3 , CO 2 H, CO 2 (C 1-7 alkyl), NO 2 , NH a , C 1-7 alkylamino, di(C 1-7 alkyl)amino, SO 2 NH 2 , SO 2 N(C 1-7 alkyl) 2 or CHF 2 SO 2 , or (r=2) 2 adjacent R<SP>1</SP> represent C 1-4 alkylenedioxy; R<SP>2</SP> is H, C 1-7 alkyl, acyl, haloacyl, aralkyl or haloaralkyl; and R<SP>3</SP> is (CHY) m- A or (CHY) p -CO-B, where A is CN, OH or C 1-7 alkoxy, Y is H or Me, m and p are each 0-7 and B is OH, CO 2 H, C 1-7 alkyl or alkoxy, X 2 N or X 2 N-C 1-7 -alkyl, where each X is H or C 1-7 alkyl, provided that when R<SP>2</SP> is H, acyl or haloacyl, R<SP>1</SP> is not alkoxy. These compounds are prepared by reacting together a phenylhydrazine with a 3-substituted cyclopentanone or cyclohexanone, and optionally converting functional groups in the product to other groups, by known means. Therapeutic compositions for oral, parenteral or rectal administration comprise compounds of the above formula, which have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antirheumatic activity. [GB1299041A]
