Abstract

1317654 Cable joints PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd 11 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 31441/70 Addition to 1309248 Heading H2E A method of jointing electric cables comprises the steps of joining together the cable conductors, forming around the join a tubular container 12 with a longitudinal slot 18, introducing granular electrically insulating material 20, e.g. high-density polyethylene, into the container through the slot, sliding a metal sleeve 22 over the container 12 and introducing foamable plastics material which then foams and expands throughout the container. The container 12 is formed from two circular supports 14 embraced by a sheet 16 of flexible material such as plastics mesh which may be secured in position by threads. Two apertures are provided in the supports 14 and/or the sleeve 22, one for the introduction of the foamable plastics material and one to act as an air vent. Some further granules of insulating material may be mixed with the foamable plastics material before it is introduced into the container 12, the grain size of the granules being smaller than that of the granular material 20. Both quantities of granular material have a greater thermal conductivity than the foamed and cured plastics material. [GB1317654A]
