Abstract
1339081 Bipyridyl derivatives IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 5098/71 Heading C2C 1,1<SP>1 </SP>- Di(hydroxyalkyl) - 1,1<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP> - tetrahydro-4,4<SP>1</SP>-bipyridyls are prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide with the interaction product of a metal and an optionally substituted pyridine. The reaction is preferably carried out under substantially anhydrous conditions, in the substantial absence of molecular oxygen, in the presence of a liquid diluent (e.g. liquid NH 3 ) and at - 120‹ to 200‹ C. The alkylene oxide used preferably contains 2-10 C atoms (e.g. ethylene oxide). The 1,1<SP>1</SP>-di(hydroxyalkyl)-1,1<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-tetrahydro-4,4<SP>1</SP>-bipyridyl, after optional protonation (e.g. using MeOH or NH 4 NO 3 ), may be oxidized (e.g. with SO 2 ) to produce the corresponding 1,1<SP>1</SP>-di(hydroxyalkyl)-4,4<SP>1</SP>-bipyridylium salt. The Examples describe the preparation of 1,1<SP>1 </SP>- di(2 - hydroxyethyl) - 1,1<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP> - tetrahydro-4,41-bipyridyl and the corresponding 1,11- di(2-hydroxyethyl)-4,4<SP>1</SP>-bipyridylium cation. The bipyridylium salts may be used as herbicides in aqueous solution usually after formulation with a wetting agent.
