Abstract
1377181 Tobacco smoke filters IMPERIAL GROUP Ltd 14 Jan 1972 [1 Feb 1971] 3550/71 Heading A2C A filter is made by compacting the core of a plug of filter material so that a cylindrical wall 4 and an end wall 5 of greater density than the cylindrical wall are formed, in order that smoke has to pass through the cylindrical wall before it reaches the smoker, as shown by the arrows q in Fig. 2. A preferred method of manufacture, see Fig. 7 (not shown), comprises providing a plug of double the required lengths, compressing its core from both ends simultaneously, and then separating the two filters so formed. The core may be an integral part of the plug, or it may be made from a different, less dense, material. Apparatus for making such a filter, see Fig. 8, comprises a drum 87 which has longitudinal flutes 91 in which the plugs are held by vacuum, a pair of compacting rods 106, 107 aligned with each flute which are made to reciprocate to compress the filter plug cores by cam surfaces 73, 79 of stationary cam plates 70, 65. The outside surface of the filter is preferably fluted, see Figs. 12a and 12b (not shown) and wrapped by a cylindrical wrapper to form channels for the smoke to pass to the smoker's mouth. Alternatively, see Figs. 10-11 (not shown), the filter may be wrapped in a corrugated sheath and a cylindrical external sheath, or in a single longitudinally fluted wrapper. The preferred materials of manufacture are cellulose acetate or foamed and other fibrous synthetic resins. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1222789.
