Abstract

1365574 Rotary-percussive drills HILTI AG 18 Oct 1972 [25 Nov 1971] 47957/72 Heading B3C [Also in Division B4] An electropneumatic hammer drill comprises a percussion piston 19 reciprocated by a drive piston 18 and air cushion 20 to hammer a drill 21, and holding means 28 which hold the percussion piston clear of vent ports 16c for escape of the air cushion and which release the percussion piston when the drill is loaded inwards to render the hammer operative. As shown, a motor 1 reciprocates the drive piston 18 through a crank-pin 8b while rotating the drill 21 and cylinder 16 in bearings 14, 15 and 23 through bevel gears 12, 13. The holding means may be a metal split ring 28 which can frictionally hold the rod 19b of the percussion piston when this is driven to the inoperative forward position at the end of the cylinder where the vent ports 16c are uncovered to destroy the air cushion. The hammer is re-set to the position shown by pressing the drill against the material to be worked. Instead of a friction ring 28, the holding means may comprise a friction cam, friction shoe, ball catch or magnet. When rotary movement only is required, drill 21 having a shorter shank 21a is used to enable the percussion piston 19 to move into the forward inoperative position. [GB1365574A]
